Lynch has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to reducing carbon emissions and supporting sustainability initiatives for their clients. By integrating cutting-edge technologies such as the Ultimate Cell, Lynch actively advances its Net Zero Carbon goals while helping clients achieve their environmental targets.
During early discussions with Kier Transportation at EKFB supplier events, Lynch identified the need for advanced technology to reduce carbon emissions on the HS2 project in the Calvert area. The objective was to find a cost-effective solution that could significantly lower carbon emissions without compromising operational efficiency.
Between October and December 2023, Lynch and Kier Transportation conducted biweekly workshops, ultimately selecting the Ultimate Cell Truck Engine V3.0 as the most promising technology for trial. The plan involved retrofitting the device to a heavy excavator with a standard Tier V diesel engine. Collaboration with Caterpillar ensured that this retrofit complied with OEM standards and warranties.
From February to May 2024, the impact of Ultimate Cell on fuel consumption and emissions was rigorously evaluated. A Triple Cell Unit was installed on one excavator, while a second, identical machine operated with standard OEM specifications as a control. Both machines were subjected to identical workloads, enabling a direct and accurate comparison of performance. Regular updates to project management teams every four weeks verified effectiveness, measured emissions and fuel savings, and addressed any concerns.
The Ultimate Cell is a compact, smart retrofit device that optimises combustion engines by producing hydrogen on demand through electrolysis. Small amounts of hydrogen are injected into the engine’s air intake, synchronised with the engine’s load and speed. This eliminates the need for hydrogen storage tanks on vehicles or on-site.
The device’s modular design allows it to scale from 3 to 6 cells based on the equipment requirements. Patented for versatility, the Ultimate Cell is compatible with a variety of fuel types, including diesel, petrol, LPG, and ethanol, adhering to both US and European standards.
The trial, conducted over four months, involved equipping one excavator with a Triple Cell Unit while maintaining the other as a control machine with standard specifications. Statistical methods were used to analyse the data collected over this period. Both machines operated under identical workloads to ensure results reflected actual performance improvements.
Further cost benefits include reduced maintenance needs for components like DPF filters and EGR valves, which result in less downtime and lower servicing costs.
The Ultimate Cell’s hydrogen-on-demand technology improved fuel efficiency significantly, reducing operational costs and environmental impact. With a 31% reduction in fuel usage and emissions, the solution aligns with HS2’s sustainability goals and supports broader carbon reduction initiatives.
The economic feasibility of the device is underscored by its swift three-month payback period. These results highlight the Ultimate Cell’s capacity to revolutionise efficiency in construction and industrial operations.
“I am inspired to bring this innovative technology to life on the HS2 project. By promoting collaboration and supporting our supply chain, we achieve outstanding results with immense cost and carbon savings. We are shaping a sustainable future for everyone.”
– Jonathan Pearce, Project Director, Kier
“This innovation has the potential to evolve and make a substantial impact, generating cost and carbon savings not just for Kier, EKFB, and HS2 but for industries nationwide.”
– Sean McManamon, Senior Project Manager, Kier
The deployment of the Ultimate Cell Truck Engine V3.0 marks a significant step forward in sustainable construction practices. Lynch plans to integrate Ultimate Cell devices across all its machinery, projecting total savings exceeding £500,000 annually and a carbon reduction of over 60,000 kg. This initiative represents a bold move towards environmentally responsible and economically efficient operations.
Fuel usage decreased by 31%, reducing consumption from 12 L/hour to 8 L/hour.
Annual fuel savings per machine are projected at £11,400, based on a diesel price of £1.20 per litre and a 10-hour workday over 260 days.
Emissions dropped from 3,576.6 kg to 2,337.1 kg, representing a 31% reduction.
From individual vehicles to large commercial fleets and industrial machinery, Ultimate Cell delivers measurable savings and sustainability benefits through proven hydrogen-on-demand technology.
